election fever

The past few days has seen election fever hold Singapore tight in its grip. And as the dust settles, let us not forget that what we really should have voted for, or will vote for in future elections, is the development of Singapore on a whole. Not just your elevator, your block, your district, but your country.

I hope we haven't lost sight of this:

OUR NATIONAL PLEDGE

We the citizens of Singapore,
Pledge ourselves as one united people.
Regardless of race, language or religion,
To build a democratic society,
Based on justice and equality,
So as to achieve happiness, prosperity,
And progess for our nation.

And in Chinese:

我们是新加坡公民,
誓约不分宗族,言语,宗教,
团结一致。
建设公正平等的民主社会,
并未实现国家之幸福,
繁荣与进步,
共同努力。

Please do keep in mind the ideals that one of our "founding fathers" Mr. Rajaratnam had as he penned our pledge.

The elections may have divided us during this period, with party lines being drawn. But now that it's been done and dusted, let us work harder tomorrow, with the vision of building a better Singapore and a better home for ourselves and our children.
